Took door panel off, looks like the cable has slack in it so that when the handle is pulled, the latch is not engaged enough to open door. The handle seems to be raised about an 1/8th inch compared to other door handles. Was hoping this would be the zip tie fix but I don't.

E53 Rear Door Stuck Closed - Inside/Outside won't open
So I recently replaced my Rear left (passenger side - Aus) carrier handle as it had broken.
After I replaced it I tested it and it was fine. Then after the first drive it wouldn't open from inside or outside handle.
It turned out to be the door actuator not resetting from the outter door carrier cable. I managed to get into the door and open it, pulled the actuator out a mind gave it some lube. The spring appears to be fine but not sure if it's lost any force or not.
Just wondering what is most like the issue? Would it be the cable length being too short on the new carrier or the door actuator mech spring not strong enough anymore. Also I tested it like 30 times when I put it back and it was fine then took it for a drive again and it stopped working again. Could the central locking cause any issues? The central locking does work fine lock/unlocking.
Ideas? I really don't want to pull the carrier out unless I have to as it was a bitch to do nothing aligns easy.

You should be able to use the key on the driver's door to gain access to the interior of the vehicle. Then follow the attached graphic to manually release the liftgate (upper portion of the hatch) and tailgate (lower portion of the hatch), in that order. But if the battery isn't too far gone, I would try to jump-start the car instead and just use the central locking system. You don't need access to the rear-mounted battery for this; BMW provides a post under under the hood for the positive terminal, which can be accessed by opening a small tabbed box toward the windshield that's marked with a '+' sign. And of course you can just connect the negative side of the jumper cable to any chassis point of the car.
